ALL ABOUT SCRAPBOOKING

Scrapbooking today is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States, and across the globe. Those who engage in scrapbooking range from individuals who put together simple photo albums, to scrapbooking enthusiasts who utilize specially designed albums to store and display their printed memorabilia, along with a large variety of embellishments.

So what is scrapbooking?

Simply put, scrapbooking is a hobby in which printed memorabilia – photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, stamps, letters, and any other type of printed paper product – is contained within an album, usually with some type of design on the album cover, its pages, or decorative elements added through personal or purchased products. These can include stickers, decorative paper or die-cut designs, lettering stencils, or a host of other products.

So when did scrapbooking begin?

It's difficult to trace the exact origins of scrapbooking. The history of scrapbooking may possibly date as far back as ancient Greece. But it can be said that one of the earliest forms of scrapbooking that closely mirrors today’s modern scrapbooking hobby is the collection of newspaper clippings. In the 1800’s, President Jefferson engaged in this activity, compiling several albums of newspaper clippings. Many individuals also did the same, adding drawings and other materials to their own albums. It was at this point in time that albums designed specifically for this purpose began to emerge on the market, along with journals and friendship albums.

In 1826, a book was published entitled "Manuscript Gleanings and Literary Scrapbook". Written by John Poole, the book featured an instructional guide on how to display personal memorabilia, such as poems, letters, and pictures. These items were termed "scrap".

Benefits and Drawbacks of Traditional Photography vs. Digital Photography

The advent and popularity of digital photography has for some time caused a small stir of controversy in the world of professional photography, especially among traditional film purists, who argue about everything from economics to the "unnatural" methods of digital photo manipulation. But there are also film enthusiasts who see benefits and drawbacks to either side of the photography coin, with each method serving its own specific purpose.

Although it may appear that much of the nation has embraced digital photography as the new medium in the same fashion that DVD players replaced VCRs, traditional is still very much an integral part of the world of film and is not likely to diminish any time soon.
Ease of Use

For the novice, taking a digital picture is a simple matter of pointing and shooting. Sophisticated software on most digital cameras compensate for lighting, movement, and other factors, or possess several setting options for specific conditions, such as nighttime or scenery shots. The picture is then captured on the digital camera’s internal memory storage or a removable storage device, typically an SD card.

As most digital cameras also contain a small viewing screen, photographers can tell immediately if their shot is good or if it needs to be deleted and retaken. With traditional photography, film must be changed, and then developed before the results can be determined. However, the quality of a traditional photo is better than that of a digital camera.

New Technology vs. Old

Digital photography certainly benefits from ease of use and an extremely quick editing process thanks to user-friendly software. Additionally, the ability to take a picture one second, and send it to multiple sources the next second for viewing or upload it to a computer and edit it immediately is undeniably a benefit unique to digital photography.

Developing traditional photos from negatives is a time consuming process. The workflow requires a darkroom and a number of supplies, such as chemical trays and assorted chemicals for development and enlargement. It can be quite expensive as well, as both film and new supplies need to be purchased on a continual basis, while digital photography requires only the camera and perhaps an SD card for additional picture storage.

Traditional photo manipulation also requires a vast knowledge of many techniques, such as perspective, double exposures, color correction, and other methods. Software such as Adobe Photoshop facilitates this process for digital photos.

Photograph Quality

Traditional photography is still proven to be more efficient in terms of data capture and preservation rates. Dependent upon the camera, a traditional negative will contain infinitely more information than what many digital cameras on the market today can capture. Digital photos rely on resolution settings. Higher resolution photos may look better and will allow for greater enlargement, but also increases the file size. This limits the amount of pictures you can take that will fit on the digital camera.

Typically, most consumers will shoot digital pictures at a low resolution in order to allow themselves to fit the maximum number of pictures on their camera’s storage card. These will never compare to the quality of a traditional photo, and a high-resolution digital photo that is comparable will be enormous in file size, making it rather unfeasible.

Of course, there are many other factors to consider when comparing the two mediums, such as shutter speeds, exposure control, and light balance, to name a few. These may or may not be important to you, based upon your own photography skill level and what type of subjects you plan to shoot.

Film Preservation

It has been argued that digital media such as CDs and magnetic tape will not last, and information stored on these products can be rendered irretrievable. In fact, many CD manufacturers will not guarantee their products for more than five years. Of course, digital photos can also be stored on internal and external hard drives, but these also have the potential to become corrupt or damaged from something as simple as a power outage if not protected from a surge protector.

In contrast, traditional film, if stored under the proper conditions, is archival for decades, perhaps even a century. Ink jet prints from digital photography are much more vulnerable, and depending upon the quality of ink jet paper used, can begin to lose color after only a month.
